Workers’ Compensation under the PNG Workers Compensation Act 1978; is a government-mandated insurance program that provides benefits to workers who become injured or ill on the job or as a result of the job. It is effectively a cover that provides cash benefits, healthcare benefits, or both to workers who suffer injury or illness as a direct result of their jobs.
PMMI offers the cover to employers who are to comply with government regulations under the Act and maintain a policy inforce every year.
Benefits of the cover include:
- Medical Extension: Workers Emergency, Travel & Hospitalization Abroad (WETHA)
Subject to the terms and conditions of the policy, the insurer will pay expenses incurred for Emergency Travel or Emergency Medical Evacuation as a direct result of an injury or illness of a worker employed by the insured (employer) in respect to which the worker is entitled to be compensated under the PNG Workers Compensation (Amendment) Act 1990.
- Make Up Pay
The make-up pay cover shall pay weekly benefits in excess of any benefit payable or paid by the Office of the Workers’ Compensation.
- Traditional Rites and Funeral Benefit
This insurance extends to pay for the actual, necessary and reasonable expenses incurred during the Period of Insurance (12 months) for funeral and related expenses;
The following items of benefit are payable under the Traditional Rites and Funeral Benefit;
- Post Mortem and Transportation - Charges for post-mortem treatment and transportation of mortal remains from place of death of the Insured Person to Place of origin including charges for the coffin and the preparation of mortal remains for transportation.
- Burial or Cremation - Charges for the burial or cremation of the Insured Person at such place of origin.
- Alternative Destination - Charges for the transportation of mortal remains and burial or cremation at an alternative destination by the Insured Person’s estate, provided that the Insurer’s liability shall not be increased beyond the amount that would have been payable had the mortal remains been transported to the place of origin.
- Traditional Rites - Charges to undertake or perform any custom and or traditional rites or practices.
Benefits are subject to necessary benefit limits. Policy coverage period is a 12-month period.
